Tech journalist Kara Swisher just envisioned how Elon Musk’s X could evolve now that Donald Trump has secured a second term as president.
Swisher appeared on CNN on Wednesday morning to talk about Musk’s potential place in the forthcoming Trump administration and how she thinks it will impact his businesses.
Sharing her personal predictions, Swisher told CNN’s Kasie Hunt that it’s more than likely that X, formerly Twitter, and Donald Trump’s social media site, Truth Social, could merge into one massively profitable online “propaganda organ.”
While she called both X and Truth Social “terrible business[es]” on paper, Swisher said Trump and Musk have the opportunity to make “a lot of money” by taking X public and turning the sites into “meme stocks,” a term which describes companies whose shares go boom and bust based on viral popularity instead of traditional business metrics.
But the veteran reporter also said that X’s value is based on a lot more than mere dollars and cents.
“He’ll use it as a propaganda organ, which is precisely why he bought it,” Swisher said of Musk and X.
“People misunderstood. They kept saying he was losing money, and I think it was very clear it wasn’t about money,” she continued. “This is like this was a great investment by Elon Musk and Donald Trump, and that’s how he sees it to make.”
“He spent hundreds of millions to make billions,” Swisher said of Musk, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion in the fall of 2022.
Swisher also told CNN viewers to be aware of how much political power the platform has earned the Tesla billionaire, asking them if they’re “comfortable with a single person who has interests all over the federal government … deciding things.”
She added, “I know it’s gone on in history, but nothing like this. No one’s owned such an organ and such an ability, a public city organ. And that’s what it is, a propaganda organ that he’s created.”
One of Trump’s most vocal and most wealthy supporters during the 2024 race, Musk was there to celebrate with the president-elect during his election watch party in Florida on Tuesday night.
Following Trump’s overwhelming election win, Musk’s net worth spiked by tens of billions overnight, according to an analysis by Newsweek.
The tech CEO previously warned supporters how a Kamala Harris administration could lead to the end of X as we know it.
During an appearance on the “Joe Rogan Experience” on Monday, Musk claimed, “There’s no way that a Kamala puppet regime would allow X to exist.”
